Dear Newbie,
Don't go to art trying to understand. Don't go to art trying to learn. Go as to a meeting between two equals. You are, after all, at least half of what is happening. Open your senses and empty your mind and lean into it, as you would lean on a good friend, as you would lean into a strong wind.
If you find, as in that much abused cliché, "I don't know what it means, but I know what I like," you are starting on the right path.
