Discovery and recognition

Discovery and recognition are two versions of the Ah-ha. They were central to the teachings of Carlo Mazzone-Clementi. They are wonderful tools for analyzing a scene, especially comedy. They are inherently expressive because unlike “objectives” and “status,” they are all about change.

Discovery: From mystery, doubt or confusion, the character arrives on foreign territory, achieving a new understanding.

Recognition: From mystery, doubt or confusion, the character arrives on familiar territory, confirming an old understanding.
